Judicial reform records, 1955-1958.

The Alabama Legislature established the Judicial Advisory Council in 1955 with the authority to create the Commission for Judicial Reform. The commission's purpose was to study the practice and procedures of Alabama's courts and propose changes in these practices and procedures that would streamline the judicial system. The commission was composed of twenty of the state's leading attorneys and judges (Ala. Acts, 145, p. 390 [1955]). The commission recommended specific legislation in 1957. This legislation passed the Alabama House, but it did not come to a vote in the Alabama Senate. (Ala. House Journal, [1957] p. 233). The Commission for Judicial Reform Records consist of the reports, news clippings, photographs, press releases, and meeting minutes assembled by the commission during its three year existence. The reports set forth particular revisions in the practices of the Alabama courts suggested by the commission such as redefining the term judgement and mandating that interrogatories be answered in fifteen days. Press releases, minutes, and news clippings provide information about commission meetings. Several photographs portray members of the Judicial Advisory Council and the Commission for Judicial Reform. Financial information about the commission's expenditures is also included in the records.

A plank road or puncheon is a dirt path or road covered with a series of planks, similar to the wooden sidewalks one would see in a Western movie. Plank roads were very popular in Ontario, the U.S. Northeast and U.S. Midwest in the first half of the 19th century. From the guide to the Alabama Legislature petition MSS. 0039., 1849, (W.S.
